Sport Horse Colt Starting

Your horse's foundation sets the stage for their entire riding career. Quality starts here.

Colt Starting Program

A horse's first months of training are without a doubt the most important. It's the foundation that all future training will be built on. Any tension, confusion, mistrust of humans, or bad feelings about the training process will carry over to their future training as baggage.

Too many horses never realize their true potential, because their foundation training was full of shortcuts and force.

I take every young horse through the 4 stages of my foundation program that I've refined over 35 years. Every horse is different, but my goals for each horse at each stage remain the same.

… absolute trust in humans, clear communication, relaxation and responsiveness on the ground and in the saddle, and skills that are solid at every stage with no need to continuously solve problems. I give every horse a solid foundation that will set them up for success in any sport.

I TAKE EVERY HORSE THROUGH 4 STAGES OF DEVELOPMENT

STAGE 1

TRUST, BOUNDARIES & LANGUAGE

This stage sets the bar for the way your horse will perceive & interact with people throughout their training. We build trust, set boundaries, develop a shared language, and build confidence in all of their day-to-day activities. There must be NO FEAR of people as we move forward.

STAGE 2

COOPERATION & MOTIVATION

This stage adds more clarity and depth to language and cues on the ground. It builds your horse's motivation and responsiveness in daily work. And this is where your horse learns self-carriage and a sense of responsibility for maintaining gait/energy/direction on their own.

STAGE 3

PRE-RIDE TRAINING: EQUIPMENT & ZONES

This stage introduces acceptance of a rider without the saddle, work-in-hand in the bridle, ground driving, and the saddle. Releasing all tension in this stage will ensure relaxation, quality of movement, and your horse's ability to learn and stay connected under saddle.

STAGE 4

SOLID UNDER SADDLE

This stage transfers all of the trust, boundaries, language, confidence, relaxation & responsiveness that we built on the ground into the saddle. Then we add pattern work, obstacles, riding out of the arena, and a gentle introduction to contact and stretching into the rider's hands.
